I'm thrilled to report that as of 9/20/10 groundbreaking has officially taken place on the clinic! This is a long-anticipated and momentous occasion. Thanks be to God and thank you to all who have made this event possible through your donations. Please say prayers for the construction phase of the new Klinik Espwa. If all goes well, the Spring will bring the ability to provide enhanced care to many in much-needed adequate space. I will continue to update this blog periodically with the progress, so please keep checking in.

Welcome to S.O.S. For Haiti

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Living conditions, especially for homeless and vulnerable children, are literally hell on earth. In just thirteen years, the accomplishments of Father Marc Boisvert and many other dedicated staff and volunteers at Pwoje Espwa (Project Hope) have been amazing, but the needs are still great. The addition of a more adequate medical clinic is paramount and the benefits will be far-reaching. The new clinic will not only provide for more comprehensive medical and preventative care of the children currently in residence, but will allow Espwa to care for even more children in the future. This means more kids will be saved from a life of extreme poverty and suffering they are otherwise destined to live in Haiti. In addition, the clinic will help serve the growing needs of the local population from nearby villages, helping thousands! Please join me in making a difference ...

Who I Am & Why I'm Doing This

My name is Susan Midgett and I'm a wife and mother of two kids.... While I swam competitively growing up, I'd never done an open-water swim; I'd never been to a developing country; and I'd certainly never created a fundraising campaign and tried to raise anything close to $100,000. In 2009, that all changed. Believing God calls us to be His hands and feet on Earth to help others, and inspired by the difference one person can make in the lives of thousands (Father Marc Boisvert of FreeTheKids.org), I'm also trying to help make a difference by raising money for a much needed medical/dental clinic at Pwoje Espwa in Les Cayes, Haiti.

I first heard about Free The Kids (formerly Theo's Work) five years ago through my husband's Rotary club (Gate City Rotary). I was struck from the beginning by Father Marc's incredible story and the grass-roots effort that ensued to make Pwoje Espwa what it is today. Since then, our family has helped in various capacities to raise both funds and awareness for this worthy cause through Rotary, our church, and in our community. I'm passionate about helping the children in Haiti. Making Free The Kids the focus of my fundraising efforts was an easy choice.
